The Path to Peace Foundation
Hosts Symposium
“Peace on Earth”
At United
Nations Headquarters
On
Tuesday, 7 October, at 3:00 P.M., His Excellency Archbishop Celestino
Migliore, Apostolic Nuncio, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the
United Nations, and President of the Path to Peace Foundation, will host
the Symposium, “Peace on Earth,” to commemorate the fortieth anniversary
of the encyclical Pacem in Terris, by Pope John XXIII. This event
also coincides with the twenty-fifth anniversary of the pontificate of His
Holiness Pope John Paul II. Among the dignitaries who will be
participating in the symposium are: Secretary-General of the United
Nations, Mr. Kofi Annan; Hon. Julian R. Hunte, President 58th
Session of the General Assembly; His Eminence Cardinal Edward M. Egan,
Archbishop of New York; His Excellency Archbishop Jean-Louis Tauran,
Secretary for Relations with States of the Holy See; His Excellency
Archbishop Renato R. Martino, President of the Pontifical Council for
Justice and Peace; Ms. British A. Robinson, Director Social/International
Ministries USA Jesuit Conference; Mrs. Maria Nigro-Parker, Chief
Representative World Union of Catholic Women’s Organization; and Actress
Joan Almedilla who will recite portions of The Poetry of John Paul II -
Roman Triptych: Meditations, by Pope John Paul II
In
addition, during the reception following the symposium, the Servitor
Pacis Award will be bestowed. The Servitor Pacis Award is given
annually by the Path to Peace Foundation to individuals who have dedicated
their lives to building a culture of peace, and whose work at the local
level distinguishes them as special instruments of God’s peace and
healing. At this event, the Servitor Pacis Award will be bestowed
posthumously upon Carlo Urbani, M.D., who was instrumental in the early
detection of SARS disease; and to the Missionaries of Charity Sisters in
Baghdad for their work with the poor in Iraq, particularly during the
recent conflict.
The Path
to Peace Foundation is a non-profit Foundation, established in 1991 to
provide support for the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the
United Nations in fulfilling its humanitarian mandate of keeping the moral
standards and message of the Gospel before the universal community, and to
assist the Holy Father in encouraging all towards the Path to Peace.
