Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HOLY SEE SIDE EVENT The Human Dignity of Women in Contemporary Society: Addressing Violence Against Women On Tuesday, February 27, 2007 from 1:15 to 2:45 pm, the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See Mission, and its co-sponsors, the Path to Peace Foundation and the Vincentian Center for Church and Society, St. John’s University, NY will host a side event on the occasion of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women meeting entitled: The Human Dignity of Women in Contemporary Society: Addressing Violence Against Women at Holy Family Church, 315 East 47th Street (between First and Second Avenues) New York. The distinguished panelists include: Candy Salazar-Hill, J.D., Senior Vice President for Social Policy - Catholic Charities, USA on “Domestic Violence: Service and Policy Issues ”; Lisa A. Kurbiel, J.D., Social Affairs Officer, Best Practices Unit, Department of Peacekeeping Operations, United Nations on “Sexual Exploitation of Women and Girls: Trafficking, Prostitution and Weapons of War”; and Lori A. Nessel, J.D., Professor of Law and Director, Center for Social Justice – Seton Hall University School of Law on “Gender-Based Violence: International Human Rights and Family Reunification Policy”. The panel will be moderated by Marilyn Martone, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Theology, St. John’s University. This side event, the second in a series, will identify the key contemporary social, economic and legal issues that violence has upon women; discuss these issues through the prism of the dignity of the human person; describe current best practices and the applied ethics approach to the issue of violence and its prevention; and provide a forum for the exchange of experiences across nations and enhanced communication among panelists and participants. Focusing on some different facets of the human dignity of women in contemporary society, subsequent topics will include: Caregiving within the Family: Moral, Legal, Economic and Social Issues; and Aging with Dignity and Security. These side events are planned to be presented in conjunction with the upcoming United Nations meetings.
