HOLY SEE SIDE EVENT AT UNITED NATIONS

The Human Dignity of Women in Contemporary Society:

Issues and Best Practices in Migration and Refugee Services

On Wednesday, September 13, 2006, from 1:15 to 2:45 pm, the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See Mission, and its co-sponsors, the Path to Peace Foundation and the Vincentian Center for Church and Society, St. John’s University, NY will host a side event on the occasion of the United Nations High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development entitled:  The Human Dignity of Women in Contemporary Society: Issues and Best Practices in Migration and Refugee Services at the United Nations Headquarters, New York in Conference Room A*.

 The distinguished panelists include:  Anastasia K.  Brown, Director of Refugee Programs, Migration and Refugee Services, US Conference Catholic Bishops and  NGO co-chair of two joint US Government/Refugee Council USA Working Groups; Mary  Delorey, M.A., M.S.W., Strategic Issues Advisor, Latin America/Caribbean Region, Catholic Relief Services, and Helene Hayes, RGS, Ph.D., International Research Project on Trafficked Women in Southeast Asia, Europe, USA.

 This side event, the first in a series, will identify the key contemporary social, economic and legal issues impacting women migrants and refugees within home and host countries; discuss these issues through the prism of the dignity of each human person; describe current best practices and the applied ethics approach to issues of migration; and provide a forum for the exchange of experiences across nations and enhanced communication among panelists and participants. 

Focusing on some different facets of the human dignity of women in contemporary society, subsequent topics will include:  Caregiving within the Family:  Moral, Legal, Economic and Social Issues; and Aging with Dignity and Security.  These side events are planned to be presented in conjunction with the upcoming CEDAW and Commission on the Status of Women meetings.
