HER EXCELLENCY
SHEIKHA HAYA RASHED AL KHALIFA
PRESIDENT OF THE 61ST SESSION OF THE
UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY
TO RECEIVE THE 2007 PATH TO PEACE AWARD

On 12 June 2007 the Path to Peace Foundation will bestow the 2007 Path to Peace Award to Her Excellency Sheikha Haya Rashed Al Khalifa, President of the Sixty-first session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Archbishop Celestino Migliore, Apostolic Nuncio, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, and President of the Path to Peace Foundation, announced that Ms. Al Khalifa has been unanimously selected to receive the Award by the Board of the Path to Peace Foundation, an agency established to carry out the projects to support the work of the Holy See Mission to the United Nations.

At the time of her election as President of the General Assembly, Ms. Al Khalifa was serving as Legal Adviser to the Royal Court in the Kingdom of Bahrain. She brings to the post a long and distinguished legal career at both the national and international levels. One of the first women to practice law in her country, she has held many senior positions with leading legal organizations of the world including the International Bar Association, where she was vice-chairwoman of the arbitration and dispute resolution committee, the first woman from the Middle East to serve in this capacity. In addition she has served her country as Ambassador to France, from 2000 to 2004, and as non-resident Ambassador to Belgium, Switzerland and Spain. Over the same period she was the Kingdom’s permanent representative to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). She was also a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Arbitration Centre Consultative Committee and became Bahrain’s representative on the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce, an appointment that she still holds today.

Ms. Al Khalifa has presented numerous papers at legal conferences across the United States, Europe and Asia, on diplomacy, international arbitration, dispute resolution and the status of women in the Middle East.

It is in recognition of her dedicated efforts on behalf of peace and development that the Path to Peace Foundation honors Her Excellency Sheikha Haya Rashed Al Khalifa with the 2007 Path to Peace Award, which will be presented at a Gala Dinner held by the Foundation at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
